Metamorphika - Chenin Blanc

Costa D’Or (or Costador) Terroirs Mediterrani are around 15 different plots, scattered
around Tarragona province, mostly centred around Conca de Barberà, with mountainous as well as Mediterranean influences. The soil around here is mostly calcareous and this limestoney minerality shines through in all of these wines. Costa D’Or farm all their vines organically, the only intervention in vineyard is the use of pheromones to repel pests, a little copper and sulphur if and when needed and sometimes the use of sodium bicarbonate to
prevent powdery mildew.

As a child Joan used to pass this plot regularly, old Chenin vines planted 60 years ago by Bodega Torres, vines that by the time Joan took on the plot in 2014, had been abandoned for years and were almost on the verge of dying. His first vintage Joan lost all of the little production there was to botritis and wild boar. The second vintage he managed to save enough grapes to just make 600 bottles of Metamorphika. The plot is now at a healthy level and produces grapes of concentration and quality.
Whole bunch static maceration for 6 days in tinaja before being pressed off and passed to old French oak barrels and demi-muids (225L and 600L) for ageing 5 months. Fermentation is spontaneous and only a small amount of sulphur is added (less than 10mg/L) just before bottling.
