Our Lockdown Story:

Its been a wild ride since the 23rd of March 2020 when the government ordered all non-essential shops & hospitality to close. We remember watching the news roll in on the laptop whilst behind the bar. Lockdown had begun. Filled with anxiety, dread and fear, we shut up shop and mulled things over.

On the 28th of March, we launched our local delivery service using a cargo bike which we borrowed from our neighbours, Brunswick East. Initially, we serviced a handful of postcodes immediately local to Hackney Downs. We only delivered a couple of days per week but it was enough to help get through some of our stock.

By May we decided to open our Hackney store a few days a week for collections as our online delivery service was becoming really popular. Thankfully we had now upgraded from Brunswick's bike to a Zipcar!

Some of you may know that after 4 beautiful years pitching up alongside Hiver Beers, our original 'Pop Up' in Bermondsey officially came to an end in May 2020. It was so sad to see this go but it made a lot of sense for us to focus on our Hackney Downs site and online store. At this point, we decided to expand our local delivery area to Bermondsey to service our very first flag wavers.

Elliot's brother, Mitch joined us in May as we needed more hands on deck to help run the shop...plus he was going crazy being locked at home like the rest of us. You guys kept coming into the shop so we added extra days and extended the hours. 

Throughout the Summer of 2020 we did some 'behind the scenes work' and expanded our shop into the unit next door. This was a huge milestone for us, we added 4 new fridges which allowed us to give you more choice plus we could bring you new breweries and we had more space for requests. The wine wall went up to showcase so many low-intervention & natural wine producers. Once again you all lapped it up!!!

October rolled around as we welcomed Jake & Ollie from Pastore Pasta into Downmarket - these two are super brave to be starting out in the middle of a pandemic. They bought a new level of energy into the space that was really needed. We had been focusing mainly on deliveries and takeaway trade, and these two came in and revitalised the evening experience in Downmarket. We saw so many faces in our home after so long of seeing everyone in yours (well...your doorstep), it was truly humbling to see everyone make the effort to come and see us. Sadly this was short-lived as Tier 4 was introduced just before Christmas was canceled.

December was a complete blur, we did our first beer advent calendar where Elliot & Libby personally wrapped every single can that went out to you. It was such a pleasure to get all the photos each day of you unwrapping the treats & to know we were a part of your Christmas joy. We also welcomed David to our team. AGB grows to 4 employees.

As the lockdown continued until April, we started to see more and more of you referring your mates and using our local delivery service. In March we welcomed two new members to our team, Chris our faithful delivery driver & Loretta our little booze lorry. We now offer free delivery to North, East & South East London, 4 days per week.

Fast forward to April 2021 and we are busy preparing to re-open (albeit outside only). We partnered up with Pastore Pasta for a dream combo of Ancient Grain Pasta and craft beer & natural wines. Amanda joins our team, making us 6 people strong now.

We reach a new milestone this week, picking up keys to a warehouse space that will soon house a walk-in coldroom and extra storage. Looking forward, our eyes are firmly set on 17th May when we're expecting to welcome you back inside once again and we can all start enjoying being that next step closer to normality.
